Climate Risk Analyst (2)

The role

RED is looking for two highly motivated weather and climate risk analysts to be integrated within its climate risk team. The successful candidates will contribute to the production of hazard and risk metrics for a large number of perils (including but not limited to flood, wind, landslide, wildfire, hail, heatwave), the development of hazard and risk models and the operation of climate intelligence tools for the insurance and the financial industries, as well as participate in other activities carried out by the climate risk team and by the whole company. The job is based in Pavia (Italy) and the possibility of remote working will be considered.

RED (Risk, Engineering and Development) SpA offers a wide range of services in the field of natural and human-induced hazard and risk assessment, with focus on earthquake and climate-related perils. RED is a dynamic and international environment which strives for high quality while at the same time valuing life-work balance. RED currently counts on around 20 employees and collaborators with different backgrounds (civil and environmental engineering, meteorology, seismology, hydrology, earth sciences, etc.). Most of its employees hold a Master or PhD degree. Its headquarters are located in the city centre of Pavia (Italy).

Job description

The successful candidate will perform the following tasks:

  • Large-scale dataset processing and analysis;
  • Hazard model development for several perils;
  • Risk assessment and risk metrics development and interpretation;
  • Operation of existing and new hazard and risk models;
  • Support in any activity performed by the weather-related perils team;
  • Autonomous work management, reporting and communication (internal and external).

Selection criteria

  • An academic degree in a relevant scientific area (hydrology, meteorology, atmospheric sciences, natural sciences, environmental engineering, physical geography, etc.). A PhD degree is an advantage.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in the field of hazard assessment and modelling for climate-related perils.
  • Experience in computer programming in the context of climate analysis, earth observation data analysis or risk model development (minimum 2 years), preferably in Python.
  • Strong mathematical skills, with special focus on statistics and probability.
  • Experience with climate and/or hydrological analysis and data.
  • Strong understanding of climate and hydrological processes.
  • Experience in the use of GIS software, preferably QGIS.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and spoken) in English. Knowledge of Italian is an advantage.
  • Motivation, attention to detail, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Basic knowledge of the insurance industry is an advantage.
Profiles with longer experience/more qualification than required might also be evaluated and a position commensurate with the individual’s experience might be offered.
